Photoshop History

Also from the Adobe Press text, “Real World Adobe Photoshop CS2,” an answer to a question posed by one of the Tuesday PM students:

In the history palette, “snapshots are also lost when the image is saved. You can save a snapshot as a new file, however, simply by right-clicking the snapshot and choosing New Document.”

So, to answer the question, the snapshots and history states are lost when you close a PSD file, but Photoshop allows you the flexibility to create a new document from a snapshot.
